Thinking about starting a laundry business in Sri Lanka but don’t know where to begin?
Good news, you’ve picked one of the most evergreen businesses out there.
However, it is not a sexy business. Nobody’s going to go viral on TikTok because they found an amazing laundromat.
But that’s actually the point. It’s boring, it’s consistent, and people will always need it.
Service is what separates the good from the bad here. On time delivery, clean results, and just being easy to deal with will take you further than any fancy equipment. Most laundry businesses fail on the basics, which means if you just nail the basics, you’re already ahead.
In this post I’m going to show exactly how to start a laundry business in Sri Lanka, from setting up your operation to landing your first customers.
Is A Laundry Business Worth Starting In Sri Lanka?
Yes, a laundry business is a good idea depending on where you live.
Sri Lanka’s urban population is growing fast. More people are moving into apartments, more students are living away from home, more professionals are working long hours and have zero time to deal with laundry.
That’s your customer base, and it’s expanding every year.
Hotels, guesthouses, salons, Airbnbs, and small offices are also looking for reliable laundry services because doing it in-house is a headache they’d rather pay someone else to solve.

The other thing I like about this business is the repeat factor.
When someone finds a laundry service they trust, they stick with it. You’re not out there hunting for new customers every single week.
You build a base, you serve them well, and the revenue becomes predictable over time. That’s a genuinely good position to be in as a small business owner.

Types Of Laundry Businesses You Can Start
First, you need to decide what kind of laundry business actually makes sense for your situation.
Because there’s more than one way to do this, and the right model depends on your budget, your location, and how hands-on you want to be:
Home Based Laundry Service
This is the lowest risk way to get started. You’re using your own space, your own equipment, and keeping overhead basically at zero.
You take in laundry from neighbors, friends, and nearby households, wash and fold everything at home, and either have them pick it up or drop it off yourself.
It’s simple, it’s manageable, and it’s a great way to learn the business before you scale.
The limitation is capacity. You can only handle so much volume from a home setup, which is actually fine when you’re just starting out.
Pickup And Delivery Only Model
This one is my personal favorite for anyone starting with low capital.
You don’t need a shop. You don’t even need a dedicated space beyond somewhere to wash and fold. You take orders through WhatsApp or a simple social media page, pick up laundry from customers’ homes, wash it, and deliver it back.
Your marketing is mostly online, your overhead is low, and you can run the whole thing yourself in the beginning. As demand grows, you hire a helper or a driver.
This model is very scalable and honestly one of the smartest ways to enter this market right now.
Laundromat (Self Service)
This is the most capital-heavy option on the list and it’s not something I’d recommend starting with unless you’ve already got solid funding.
A self-service laundromat requires:
- Multiple commercial-grade machines
- A good location with consistent foot traffic
- Ongoing maintenance
The upside is that once it’s set up and running, it can operate with minimal staff. But getting it to that point takes real investment.
Itโs something to consider down the line once you’ve learned the business through a smaller model first.

How Much Capital Do You Need?
This really depends on which model you go with, so let me break it down roughly.
For a home based setup, if you already own a decent washing machine, your startup costs are almost nothing.
You’re spending on detergent, packaging, maybe a drying rack or iron, and some basic marketing. You could realistically get started for under Rs 20,000.
For a pickup and delivery model, you’re looking at similar costs plus whatever you spend on fuel or a delivery vehicle if you don’t already have one. Budget somewhere between Rs 30,000 – 75,000 depending on your situation.
For a small laundry shop, factor in rent deposits, one or two commercial washing machines, a dryer, an iron, shelving, signage, and initial supplies. You’re realistically looking at anywhere from Rs 300,000 to 700,000 depending on location and equipment quality.
Buying second-hand machines can cut this down a lot.
A full self-service laundromat will run you well over a million rupees by the time you’ve sorted equipment, fit-out, and location.
Finding The Right Location
If you’re going with a shop, location is going to make or break you.
The best spots for a laundry business are anywhere people live in high density without easy access to their own washing facilities.
Think about areas near universities and student hostels. Students are one of your best customer segments because they genuinely do not have time, space, or sometimes equipment to do laundry themselves.
Areas with a lot of apartments, guesthouses, budget hotels, and working professional housing are also goldmines.

Anywhere tourism is active is worth looking at too, because guesthouses and Airbnb hosts always need laundry support.
If you’re doing a pickup and delivery model, location matters less because you’re going to the customer anyway. In that case, focus on which neighborhoods you want to serve and make sure you can realistically cover them with your transport setup.
How To Get Your First Laundry Customers
This is the part most people underthink and it’s the reason a lot of laundry businesses struggle in the first few months. Having a working operation means nothing if nobody knows you exist.
Here’s what I’d actually do:
#1 Google Business Profile
Set this up before anything else.
When someone in your area searches “laundry service near me” or “laundry pickup Colombo,” you want your business to show up.
A Google Business Profile is completely free, takes a couple of hours to set up properly, and can bring in consistent leads without spending anything on ads.
Get your first few customers to leave you reviews and you’ll start ranking pretty quickly for local searches.
#2 Facebook And Instagram Ads
These are your best paid options for a local service business.
You can target people by location, age, and interests, which means you’re not wasting money showing your ad to people who live nowhere near you.
Start with a small daily budget, test a simple ad showing your service and pricing, and see what response you get.
Facebook ads for local services in Sri Lanka don’t need to be expensive to work. Even Rs 500 to 1000 a day can generate real leads when the targeting is right.

#3 Partner With Hostels And Small Hotels
This is honestly one of the most underused customer acquisition strategies for laundry businesses.
Walk into small hotels, guesthouses, and hostels in your area and offer them a fixed rate for regular laundry pickups. These places have a constant, predictable volume of laundry and most of them don’t have their own in-house solution.
If you can offer reliable service at a fair price, you can land one account that alone keeps you busy multiple days a week.
#4 Flyers And Word Of Mouth
Old school but it works, especially in residential areas.
Design a clean simple flyer with your service, pricing, and WhatsApp number and distribute it in apartment buildings, put it up on notice boards, and hand it out in areas near your target neighborhoods.
Also tell everyone you know what you’re doing.
Word of mouth is genuinely powerful for local service businesses and your first ten customers will probably come from people you already know or people they referred.
#5 Offer A Free First Wash Promotion
Offer new customers a free first wash or a heavily discounted first order.
Once someone has experienced your service and seen that you’re reliable, on time, and do a good job, converting them into a paying regular customer becomes very easy.
You’re not losing money, you’re buying a customer relationship. And in a business built on repeat orders, that’s a very good investment.
How To Keep Customers Coming Back
Getting your first customers is one thing. Keeping them is where the real money is made.
The single most important thing you can do is be reliable.
Pick up when you said you would. Deliver when you said you would. If something comes up and there’s going to be a delay, message the customer before they have to chase you.
That level of basic communication alone will make you stand out from most of the competition.
Use WhatsApp to stay in touch with your regulars. A simple message reminding them you’re available or checking if they need a pickup this week goes a long way.
Consider offering a weekly or monthly subscription package. Something like a flat monthly fee for two pickups a week. Customers get a predictable cost and convenience, and you get guaranteed recurring revenue. It’s a win on both sides.
Loyalty discounts are also worth doing once you have a solid base.
A small discount for customers who’ve been with you for three months or refer a friend costs you very little but builds genuine goodwill.
People like feeling appreciated by businesses they support, and they’ll talk about you when they do.
Bottom Line
A laundry business is genuinely profitable if you run it right. The demand is there, the repeat customer potential is there, and most of the existing competition is not doing a great job, which means there’s real room for someone who takes service seriously.
Start with the model that fits your budget right now. Focus obsessively on your first ten customers and make sure every single one of them has a great experience.
Build from there.
You don’t need to figure everything out before you start. You just need to start, and then keep improving as you go.
